Thanks for the article on mentoring. Found it helpful. It talks about conflict of interest if you have an advisor who sits on the residency selection committee. I'm wondering how you deal with this since I'll be applying this summer. Would love to hear from you fourth years out there.

I agree become your own advisor/mentor, but at the same time, a lot of times what people say on SDN is garbage, pure absolute garbage, and then you have those people that do nothing but go on and regurgitate the garbage incessantly like it was they who discovered said garbage...sheesh, no wonder so many people are turned off of SDN. Luckily, there are some great advisors on this board, that I encourage anyone interested in a particular field to email directly, most of them have recently gone through the match and residency and can offer advice on how it worked exactly rather than hearing from Joe Shmoh about how one guy told me this and thats what I am engraving on my skin so i never forget. Bottom line...find mentors, find more than one, compare and contrast what each has to say, and then make your own decision....THAT is what being a physician is all about, don't be a sheep and regurgitate!

I think the best advising I got was going on the internet and in forums like this hearing how students anonymously describe everything from clinical rotations, to doing outside electives to the nitty gritty of applying for residency. Working with an advisor can be a waste of time, especially when find out that one is not on your side, . . . doesn't give good information, just talks in generalities. You can't and shouldn't rely on mentors or advisors to helpl you chart the course of anything in life, stakes are too high and quality of advisors and mentors varies greatly. Become your own advisor or mentor!
