I left a research career for a career in medical writing. I've been freelance writing and editing for a year and I could not be happier! Medical writing is not only just an option for medical doctors, but for scientists with a PhD within the biomedical sciences. I wanted to be a scientist: read, write, and talk about recent advances in the biomedical sciences field... but I was burning out on spending 12+ hours in the lab for experiments that only work some of the time. It takes a lot of persistence to get regular work, but it is so rewarding!

That's a really great summary of what medical writers do. It's rare to find such useful descriptions, so kudos for doing so.

Your advice to join AMWA is sound, as they are a great organisation. However, it's perhaps worth mentioning for any non-US readers of your blog (and with a great article like that, I'm sure it will be read widely) that the European Medical Writers Association would be a more appropriate choice for any medical writers in Europe. EMWA also welcomes members from the rest of the world, and no doubt AMWA does do. Anyone outside the US or Europe might want to look at both and see which they prefer.

It was very interesting reading your article and you have very explicitly touched upon Medical writing and the immense opportunities in this lesser known but highly exciting..equally remunerative area. I partner with pharma co. supporting them by providing comprehensive medico-mktg consulatncy and communication solutions. Grateful if you could recommend some of your references who are interested in medical writing especially in Chinese

Look fwd to hearing from you.

Thanks & Regards,

An excellent source for medical writers researching autism is found on You Tube posted by a mother of a severely autistic boy who says epidemic gone crazy, and people USING and abusing the autism label...the videos(there are two) are titled "autism spectrum seems out of control" and "autism epidemic out of control?" So, if its genetic, it would be nice to have a test so the spectrum could weed out those who aren't really autistic, so question is, is autism acquired or genetic? The mom in video says one her relatives is Aspergers and her son is autistic so right there you see the possiblity of a genetic link, no?

Dear Guillaume,

For the sake of your stateside publishing potential, I hope that the English translations of your books are significantly superior to that of your message posted above!

I am a professional medical translator (a completely bilingual French-English medical student on maternity leave) and would like to offer my services in translating, editing, and/or copy-editing your company's portfolio of works. I am very familiar with the standards required by U.S. publishers. My rates are reasonable, I am quick, and easy to collaborate with. Please contact me at juliasaintpaul (insert "at" sign) hotmail.com if you would like to discuss this further.

All the best,
Julia

Dear Colleague,

As well French MD (specialised in International Health Policy and emergencies),
author of different Medical books for the french market (with one best seller
"Medi-Memo" = the memotechnics for the medical exams with 20.000 copies sold),
I have set up a publishing Cie, and we`ve just a new best seller in France
(with more than 10.000 copies sold out in 8 months - usually a hit in this medical market is considered 3000 copies/year = 5% of the medical book):
Doc Protocoles : the Fundamentals.
Inside this photographic manual handbook, all the main medical procedures with a step by step approach. With my team (6 emergencies colleague) we already translated in english and we would like to put it in the American market (as well there is already 10 others /speciality who are on process and 4 already finished). The 2 main US publisher (Elsevir and Mac Graw)are on the way to publish this kind of books (but they will need 2-6 months to set up this data base), so if you have any suggestion to help me to get publishment in US (in a double winner way), it will be a good opportunity for both.
At the moment I am working in Shanghai, and my phone number is :00 86 131 621 93 570.
Best regards,

Guillaume Zagury,
MD, MPH, MBA.
