Restorative Dentistry

From Student Doctor Network Wiki

Restorative Dentistry is the class you take that teaches you all the basic procedures you will be doing in dentistry. Operative procedures such as cavity preparations, prosthodontic procedures like crown and bridge, and other aspects of dentistry such as anatomy, dentures, etc.

Dental Anatomy

Every tooth in the mouth is different from another. One half of the mouth is usually the mirror image of the other half of the mouth. What makes dental anatomy so complicated? It isn't, once you get used to the terms and definitions and how they are used. For instance, if you haven't started dental school yet and someone told you to point out the DL cusp of #3, you would have trouble. What about the buccal face of the mesio lingual cusp of tooth #31? Each tooth has on average a specific anatomy, a specific point where it contacts the tooth next to it, a specific shape, and a specific occlusion (where it contacts the teeth in the opposing arch). Example questions: Which is located more cervically? The contact between teeth 18 & 19 or the contact on 21 & 22? In a laterotrusive movement where does the cusp of tooth 30 travel? etc.

Operative

There are various types of cavities in the mouth. They are given designated names depending where on the tooth they are located.
