Ophthalmology Resident Selection: Current Selection Criteria

I ran across this article in May issue of Ophthalmology. I thought it would be helpful to some who have not come across it since we are in the middle of the interview season. Good luck to all! PMID: 20110128 Ophthalmology. 2010 May;117(5):1041-7. Epub 2010 Jan 27.

Step 2 score and fellowship matching

I agree with above posters. It does not matter as much as Step 1 when you are applying for residency but they do ask for it and they do look at it when they are considering your fellowship application. In addition, they also look at Step 3 scores too.

    oculoplastic surgery book recommendations

I found the Oculoplastic Surgery: The Requisites in Ophthalmology by Jeff Nerad M.D. to be helpful during my oculoplastics rotation.

    How to THANK?

I would advise against thank you letters since it'll only waste your time...if you REALLY feel obliged to write a letter, just write an EMAIL to the PD and the Chair if they happened to have interviewed you. The letters via snail mail will just end up in the trash, or your "file" and never get read.

    Blepharoplasty

All ophthalmologists are trained to perform simple oculoplastic surgeries on the eyelids including blephroplasty. If you are a comprehensive ophthalmologist, it's definitely in your scope of practice to perform them as long as you are comfortable doing them.

    year of research?

Aliehs, CRTP is a great program, I'm sure you'll have valuable experiences there as well as meet great people. Let me know if you have any questions about the program, I went through CRTP a few years back and will be happy to offer any advice.

    when to schedule?

I think if you're desperate to go to a specific program, try to schedule it in the middle of your interviews so you have some experience with interviews but not yet burned out from going to so many. If you are any one of the "typical" optho applicant and decides to attend 10-15 interviews...

    Personal Statement for TY/Prelim Years

That's exactly what I did last year and I ended up at my first choice prelim program. Try not to spend too much time on the personal statement for the prelim, you should focus more on the SFMatch. Good luck!

How to (im)properly ? receive an ophthalmology consult.

Bulldoc, fortunately, I'm definitely NOT going into ophtho program at the place I'm doing my prelim. I actually didn't even apply to this program since I was looking to go to the "best" program for me.

How to (im)properly ? receive an ophthalmology consult.

This is a story that happened to me today that made me a little uneasy, so bear with me since this might get a little lengthy. Please bear in mind that I’m currently doing an internal medicine prelim year and will be entering ophthalmology training in 2008. It’s been literally 2 weeks into my...

    Interview Season

Vast majority of my interviews were done during last week of november and first 2 weeks of December. You won't have any time to do anything else but fly, sleep and interview during those 3-4 weeks. Good luck!

This is bad news for everyone if SF match really did screw up...I hope the Urology match fiasco of 2005 doesn't happen to Ophtho match...
