San Juan Bautista Escuela de Medicina

Good news for SJB! :) UPR is very stingy about admitting mainland students (I didn't qualify back in 2002 despite my mother being an undergraduate alumni) so this could be very significant to Puerto Rican applicants in the States as well. And yes, many do go to the DR or...

    Pittsburgh housing

I live in Bloomfield just 1-2 minute's walk away from West Penn. It's not a fancy neighborhood and I agree the houses are on the old side, but I haven't found it sketchy either (speaking as a single female). My perspective may be skewed though having come from North Philly/Germantown. :laugh...

    U of C

Also got one - wish it did mean something, but I rather doubt it. Nice surprise though. :)

Temple - is it worth it?

I'm a Temple student and the probation took place during my preclinical years. It was definitely due to facilities (which while not great never impeded my education, so I disagreed with it meriting probation at the time) and student debt. Nothing to do with academics. :) There's been a few...

Applying to both MD and DO simultaneously? Pros/Cons?

Between PCOM and LECOM, I've seen plenty of ostepathic students and grads here in Pennsylvania. Even coming from Canada with no prior knowledge I'd have learned about them by now without ever reading SDN. :)

    Univ. Chicago - Accomodations

For peds a primary suggestion was the Residence Marriott on East Walton (near Michigan Avenue) even though it's nowhere near Hyde Park! I'd say it's worth it though since it was nice to stay downtown, and the cab fare wasn't too atrocious. Unfortunately the fare's not the cheapest even with...

    Best Cities to do Residency

Heh - you shall be converted even against your will. :D I'm the general opposite of a football fan (think figure skating instead) but even if I don't actually sit and watch the games much, you can bet I follow the scores. So Sunday was a good day. :) My hospital even has a Steeler's tree now...

    Northwestern vs Rainbow Babies

Any opinions on Rainbow vs. Cinci? I'd also appreciate comparisons to UChicago (rather than Children's Memorial) and Pitt, since all are pretty academic standalone hospitals. Location-wise I know I'd prefer Chicago, but I'm also curious how people would rank the other three cities. Thanks! :)

    Rush...when does the day end?

My itinerary from last month says 2:30, so make it three to be safe. Don't forget to bring warm stuff (in case you end up walking to/from the outpatient clinic) and I'd have breakfast before leaving - we got served after the morning conference. Good luck!

    Help with nystagmus

I've started my neurology clerkship and am tired of still not being able to tell nystagmus very well. Anyone know of some good sites that might help? What I really need is to see a good video clip several times (comparing it to normal). Thanks in advance!

    IM Rejections Thread

Well, sure beats the peds rejection:  "Unfortunately due to the large number of very qualified applicants we will nto be able to offer you an interview. Thank you for your interest and we wish you well in finding a position." That's all - no subject or signature, I only knew from...

Very important questions for future medical students

The one caveat being finances. You may change your mind and want to do peds (like me), and it's rarely worth being >150K in debt if you can avoid it.

I wish I had done family medicine

I was lucky in retrospect to have been stuck on the unofficial nursing home geriatrics team my first week of IM clerkship. By Friday I knew I'd never do that residency and headed straight to peds (though unfortunately I have adult neuro, ER and a med subI left in my fourth year). So I...

    Who's Making Interview Offers?!?!

Got Harbor-UCLA, nice surprise this late! Gives me hope for Mount Sinai which is *still* reviewing (per the coordinator who I called today, sigh). Unfortunately I also called Columbia and was told I was rejected. :( Shame since I'm loving Manhattan thanks to my NYU invite. Also was...
