School Info

OHSU School of Medicine offers a rich, multi-faceted environment for medical students, graduate students and faculty. The School, with roots dating back to 1887, is dedicated to educating highly qualified physicians, scientists and other health professionals, and to helping meet the health care needs of all Oregonians. The School is a national leader in biomedical research, translating new scientific knowledge into tangible benefits for humankind. For most of our existence, the School of Medicine has been a public institution incorporated in the Oregon State Department of Education. In 1995 we became a public corporation, a change that allowed an expansion of our research mission that has continued to flourish. In the last ten years, we have quadrupled our NIH budget and dramatically increased the size and quality of our graduate student education program.

Curriculum

The goal of the School of Medicine curriculum is to balance emphasis on the scientific basis of medicine with early clinical experience; offer progressive patient care responsibilities for students; and permit students to individualize their educational programs as well as to enhance their independent learning and problem solving skills. The sciences basic to medicine are presented in an interdisciplinary format focusing initially on the scientific principles of medicine and ultimately progressing to disease processes and the clinical management and care of patients. Embracing innovative teaching methods, our curriculum emphasizes the development of knowledge, skills, and behaviors most needed by 21st-century physicians, including interprofessional teamwork and communication, data interpretation, use of information technology and quality science.

Facilities

In 1887, the inaugural class of the University of Oregon Medical School met in the school's lone building - a two-room converted grocery store in northwest Portland. From that small school we have grown into a world-class teaching hospital and research center that draws in students, scientists, and patients from across the country and around the world. At the same time, we retain our strong commitment to serving our local community, and to treating each patient as a unique individual. With a rich diversity of activities happening across our campuses in and around Portland, we know that you can prepare yourself for a future as a health care provider.

What are your suggestions for the admissions office?

"Please communicate better with applicants. I should receive an email when I am placed in the hold pool and also receive another email when I am accepted/placed on the waitlist/rejected. I should not have to be checking the secondary portal every single day just to see whether the tiny little status dot on the secondary portal has changed. I have been checking almost every day for months now and it's been a very frustrating process." More from this Member | Report Response

What do you like most?

"We have a pretty building." | Report Response

"The access to faculty is amazing. Our small group leaders range from deans of the university to chiefs of medicine and surgery. World-class surgeons volunteer their time to aid with anatomy lab, and lecturers are truly wonderful lecturers and experts in their fields. I also love how much focus OHSU places on training students to be good clinicians - good bedside manner and patient service are vital here." | Report Response

What do you like least?

"Leadership faculty has no desire to express any empathy regardless of your situation, if you have any troubles you face the axe. Instructors get away with major behavioral issues. Upon entering clinic you are thrown into the deep end with very little instruction and unclear guidelines on what must be completed. You also have your own assigned set of patients, so you may get lucky and get a lot of experience or you may get very little experience." | Report Response

"In some ways, the school lacks support from the administration. Students are responsible for personally handling more of their scheduling, international/rotation planning, and boards prep than at many other institutions." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
