School Info

The UCSD School of Medicine is consistently ranked first or second in the nation in funding per faculty member, a measure of the faculty`s scientific prowess and productivity. UCSD physicians and researchers have been lauded with numerous awards and honors, including the Nobel Prize, Lasker Award and the membership of over 80 faculty members in the National Academy of Sciences and Institute of Medicine. The prestigious Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute are a significant presence on the School of Medicine campus, further enriching the depth of programs and talent at UCSD.

Curriculum

As for a "complete syllabus of what every medical student should grasp," Dr. Grobstein knew better. That was not agreed upon twenty-five years ago, and it has not been agreed upon since, and it will doubtless receive no pure consensus in the future. And although the faculty-chosen Committee on Educational Policy (CEP) and its two subcommittees, the Core Curriculum Committee (CCC) and the Electives Committee (EC), reach conclusions (because they have to), the dialogue between status quo and change is sustained - as befits 400 chiefs schooled in the best Socratic traditions. But the unavoidable fact that the subjects in the core curriculum you will encounter during your time here - which represents the minimum that every medical student must learn - have changed little testifies to the committees` essential nature. They are conservators, and will alter the core only after exhaustive study, debate, study, and then more debate. Insertion of new core necessarily means the death of other elements, a pronouncement made only after the sincerest scrutiny.

Facilities

UCSD`s hospitals and outpatient centers are based in La Jolla and Hillcrest and we have clinical and training affiliations with hospitals and medical practices throughout the San Diego and Imperial Counties. Our partnership with Children`s Hospital and Health Center enables us to treat a significant number of the region`s pediatric patients, and relationships with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center and the Naval Medical Center expand our patient base even further. We also have important programs and partnerships with several community-based agencies serving the homeless and needy in San Diego and in Mexico. The medical campus is constantly evolving to support the exploration of emerging frontiers.

"Specific questions about my research." More from this Member | Report Response | I was asked this question too

"My first interviewer was an M.D. at a campus hospital. He knew my file like the back of his hand, this included very specific details. He did not grill me on this, he was very laid back and seemed genuinely impressed with what we were talking about. He gave a lot of great insight to why i should attend UCSD. Questions: Tell me how traveling to (specific country) affected your view of health, especially in today's context. Tell me about your parent's work. How did you come to decide to become a physician? He asked me a few standard questions (low grades early on in college to kicking butt in classes, etc). Afterwards he did A LOT of talking about the school from his perspective and all the great things about it. It really impressed me. I interjected into the conversation but he did most of the talking which I'm not sure is a good or bad thing, but again he seemed to really like me." More from this Member | Report Response | I was asked this question too

"General comments about interviews. UCSD interviews are very thorough. The 2 interviewers who met me didn't carry my files in their hands/take notes/anything. Yet they knew my file inside out, upside down, back to front. They brought up every activity of importance I listed on the secondary, and talked in depth about them. You really gotta know your own file to prepare for this!" More from this Member | Report Response | I was asked this question too

"First Interviewer: Tell me more about yourself. Tell me about your research. How do you feel about researching later on? Tell me about your clinical experience. "Tell me about where you grew up? How was it going to high school there?" More from this Member | Report Response | I was asked this question too

"1) even though I've read your app, I like to ask people to tell me the story of their lives. 2) The people I see in medicine who are unhappy tend to be unhappy because they have been turned off by a negative experience. What negative experiences have you had in your clinical work? 3) There's tons of chaos in medicine and you basically get no time off. How will you deal with that? 4) What problems do you think there are in the healthcare system? 5) what do you look for in a medical school?" More from this Member | Report Response | I was asked this question too

"2 medical ethics questions! I had a lot of fun with those, only because no one every asked me about them and I spent so much time preparing for them. First scenario (vaguely recall details of it): A 35 year old female is a Jehovah Witness and is in the hospital. She specifically stated that she does not want a blood transfusion if anything should happen to her because of her beliefs. She has 3 kids and is married. She has some sort of complication and is in/out of consciousness. She requires a blood transfusion or she will die. You are the doctor and have to decide what to do. (just remember that there is no right/wrong answer. this case even went to the medical ethics committee because it was so complicated)" More from this Member | Report Response | I was asked this question too

What do you like most?

"Modern, up to date with teaching styles, and double pass of material before Step 1" | Report Response

"Flexibility and amazing research opportunities. You have the ability to tailor the program to your needs. Want to do a clerkship before starting the PhD? No problem. Want to do a post-doc in Paris before going back to 3rd year? That's fine too. Also, the huge number of world class researchers and facilities is fabulous. The selection at UCSD alone is amazing, but you can also work with PIs at the Salk, the Burnham, La Jolla Institute for Allergy and Immunology, Scripps Research Institute, and even the Scripps Institute for Oceanography." | Report Response

What do you like least?

"A bit of a commuter school vibe" | Report Response

"Flexibility can be daunting for those who prefer more rigid requirements and expectations." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
