School Info

One of the top medical schools in the nation, the UCSF School of Medicine is dedicated to excellence in education, research, and patient care. Woven throughout all these pursuits is a strong commitment to public service, a collaborative work ethic, and providing care for our diverse communities.

Curriculum

The curriculum challenges old assumptions about the way students learn and encourages their active participation in the process of study and investigation. Medical education must inspire. Accordingly, the list of UCSF innovations garners continual commendation not just from our own students and faculty, but from schools and education leaders across the country. These innovations include: Case-based and integrated block courses in the first two years; the third year Intersessions and the fourth year Areas of Concentration; a highly flexible digital curriculum called, iROCKET; and the Academy of Medical Educators, which offers unique institutional support for teaching excellence.

Facilities

Built in 1897, the University of California, San Francisco includes the 107-acre Parnassus campus that is home to graduate professionals in dentistry, medicine, nursing and pharmacy; a graduate division for predoctoral and postdoctoral scientists; UCSF Medical Center; UCSF Children`s Hospital; and Langley Porter Psychiatric Institute. In 2003, UCSF opened its 43-acre Mission Bay campus, just south of downtown San Francisco. UCSF, which became part of the University of California in 1873, is the only UC campus dedicated exclusively to the health sciences. UCSF now encompasses several major sites in San Francisco, in addition to its Parnassus Heights location above Golden Gate Park. It also includes UCSF Mount Zion and maintains partnerships with two affiliated institutions, San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

"My first interview was the most stressfull of my entire application cycle. This suprised me since most interviewees/past student said that their interviews were chill. The guy was a PhD and kept questioning/commenting on almost every sentence that left my mouth. Don'e get me wrong, he was super nice, but just wanted to delve into detail about everying phrase that came out of my mouth. His questions were basic: Tell me about yourself? Why medicine? What experiences have led you here? By the end of the interview, he said he hopes to see me at UCSF which was nice, but man did he stress me out. If you get someone like this, remain calm, and clearly think and talk through your answers. As I mentioned above, before going to the UCSF interview, or any closed-file interview for that matter, know how to answer the following question: TELL ME ABOUT YOURSELF. There is a 99% chance that you will be asked this, because all the interviewer knows about you is your name. So you have to develop a portrait of who you are, what your accomplishments have been, why you will be a compassionate doctor, and why UCSF should take you.)" What do you like least?

"Most educators taught well in first two years, but good luck when you hit the clinical rotations—You are expected to know and perform—sink or swim because you are being evaluated all the time. Once a while you might get lucky to get a nice (overworked) resident who will teach you a thing or two, but most of time, you better learn on your own or pick up what you can from your competitive classmates on your rotation. Attendings may give a didactic session here and there as time allows, but you will rarely get one-on-one preceptor teaching to help you learn what you don’t know. Perhaps what I am describing is not atypical of all medical school education, but be fully warned that there is no standardization of clinical experiences or evaluations here, and your grades on the clinical rotations will highly depend on how merciful or passively agressive your attending and senior resident is. Here’s an article to back this up: https://www.ama-assn.org/education/medical-school-diversity/how-ucsf-working-overcome-bias-clerkship-grading. This is one of the few medical schools that require a sub-internship rotation in internal/family medicine for graduation, and if you don’t pass, you will probably need to say bye-bye to your medical degree and be stuck with 3-4 years of med school debt. They are very proud of their « high » standards and « exceptional « clinical training. I saw many people comment on financial issues. While it’s true that rent is high on average in SF, you can sometimes find cheap places to rent due to rent control and if you are flexible enough. The biggest plus is that there is cheap and good produce and food. What’s more unbearable is the windy, chilly, gloomy weather all the time in the city. That being said, this has nothing to do with the quality of the school or what they have control over. While the tuition here may be cheaper than a private school, you will not get much if any in terms of grants or scholarships. Unlike my undergrad where there is free unlimited transcript ordering and printing for students, you will be paying $15 per transcript ordered and who knows how much per page printed here now. You can definitely tell that they are not financially as strong as private schools. Just look up the David Kessler scandal." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
