School Info

The University of South Alabama College of Medicine is a vibrant and expanding center providing all facets of medical education, research and patient care. In the undergraduate medical education program, the first two years are taught primarily on the main campus in the Medical Sciences Building. The last two clinical years are spent at the University of South Alabama Hospitals and clinics, as well as in offices of community physicians.

Curriculum

The primary objective of the curriculum is to provide the student a learning framework to obtain the information and attitudes necessary for the provision of health care to our society. This begins with a thorough knowledge of the normal structure and function of the body, and progresses to an understanding of the changes in the body and mind which lead to illness. During the first two years, the student is primarily concerned with the basic biomedical sciences. To give these studies more meaning, provision is made for contact of students with patients during these preclinical years. The junior courses (clerkships) provide training in most of the basic problems with which patients present themselves. Students learn to apply scientific principles to the examination, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease. Seminars, conferences, and clinical rounds with members of the teaching staff are important in giving the student a rounded perspective of human illness. The senior program is mostly elective in order to provide each student the opportunity to choose a program best suited to his or her individual needs.

Facilities

The College of Medicine has formal affiliations with Searcy Hospital, Keesler Air Force Base Hospital and the Biloxi Veterans Administration Hospital to provide teaching facilities for both undergraduate and graduate medical education. The College of Medicine also conducts a portion of its clinical teaching activities in other health care facilities in the area. These include the Providence Hospital and the Mobile Infirmary. Physicians? offices throughout Mobile and rural areas of Alabama are also important sites for education of medical students and residents.

What do you like most?

"I like the cooperative spirit of the student body and all the hands on experiences incorporated into the first two years." | Report Response

"The independence they encourage and foster." | Report Response

"Most of the actual physicians here are excellent professors. The curriculum has been completely redesigned for the new classes and I have heard good things about it so far. The new simulation labs are top-notch and very well facilitated. The clinical teaching staff (physicians, nurses, PAs, etc) are amazingly dedicated and knowledgeable, during the few opportunities you have during MS1 and MS2 to escape the misery of PhD education. If you are an MD/PhD applicant, then you will probably love this school (and my hat is off to you). If you want to become a physician and actually learn medicine (and eventually treat patients), then you will hate everything about this place." | Report Response

What do you like least?

"There have been some bumps in the road implementing new curricula. These are getting better as we go though." | Report Response

"The hospital and facilities are from state of the art. If that's a deal breaker, would avoid." | Report Response

"The majority of professors at this school are PhDs (and all that this implies). To say that these people are out of touch with modern clinical medicine education would be a gross understatement. If you want a PhD oriented education without an actual PhD to show for it, then you should absolutely apply here. The new curriculum may be better implemented, but bear in mind that the same people teach it (i.e. non-physicians). If the administration simply replaced the PhD staff with actual physicians, the vast majority of education issues here would be resolved. Unfortunately, the administration is also comprised almost exclusively of PhDs (the Dean of Medicine is a PhD, for example)." | Report Response

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
