School Info

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine and Research Institute (VTC) is a public-private partnership formed by Virginia Tech and Carilion Clinic. The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine is a private four-year medical school offering the doctor of medicine (M.D.) degree. Utilizing an innovative patient-centered curriculum, VTC addresses the increasing need for physicians who translate research from the bench to the bedside and into the community. The curriculum provides an exemplary education in basic sciences and clinical sciences and skills, but transcends the traditional medical education model by providing a solid foundation in, and opportunities to explore, the disciplines of research and interprofessionalism. Our small class size of 42 students allows for individualized attention and participation by each student which will in turn foster an intense and rewarding educational experience. We envision that VTC students will be highly sought after by residency programs and will become physician thought leaders in their chosen field of medicine.

Curriculum

The VTC interprofessionalism program involves VTC students in a collaboration project with students from other health professions on a community-based service learning project during the first year. The curriculum maximizes self-directed learning by minimizing formal didactic sessions and emphasizing self-directed learning. Small teams work in a problem-based learning format using patient cases. Ample time is dedicated to providing students with the opportunity to learn and practice clinical skills using lectures, panel discussions, movies, reflection, simulation models, standardized and real patients. Over the four year curriculum, each VTC student must complete a hypothesis-driven research project guided by a mentoring team, provide a written document suitable for publication, and present their work in an appropriate venue.

About the LizzyM Score

LizzyM, SDN Moderator and medical school admissions committee member, is the inventor of the LizzyM Score. The score allows you to see if you are a competitive applicant at a given school. If your LizzyM Score is far below or above the average, you may not be a good fit. If your score is far below, your application may be screened out due to numerical cutoffs. If it is far above, the school may assume they are your “safety” school and that you won’t attend if they offer an acceptance. This score should be used only as a guide to help you select schools and is not a guarantee of acceptance at any school. If you use this as your sole criteria to select medical schools to apply to, you don’t deserve to get in anyway.
