Plastic Surgery

Most plastic surgeons do not concentrate solely on cosmetic surgery. Their work involves the repair and correction of congenital defects, trauma surgery, and cancer reconstruction. In many cases the aim is to restore physical function as well as physical appearance.

• Years of training required - There are two residency options: an independent training program of 3 years duration following completion of a residency in surgery, neurological surgery, orthopedic surgery otolaryngology or urology or an integrated training program of six years duration. Application for a plastic surgery residency may be made early in your surgical residency years, or as a fourth-year medical student, you may apply for a combined program - three years general surgery and three years plastic surgery.
• Subspecialty/ Fellowship Training - One year fellowships are available in craniofacial surgery and hand surgery.
